In 2023, Wireless Power Consortium will officially launch a new wireless charging standard to unify the industry under one global standard and provide enhanced convenience and efficiency for mobile devices and wearables. This new standard, dubbed Qi2, will lead to faster wireless charging and universal compatibility of handheld and mobile devices.
Scheduled for consumer availability later this year, Qi2 will offer millions of consumers who rely on wireless charging a better wireless experience. The Qi2 (pronounced ‘chee two’) standard will replace its predecessor, Qi, in a rapidly expanding market where about one billion devices – transmitters and receivers – will be sold worldwide in 2023.
Qi2’s “Magnetic Power Profile” will not only provide an improved wireless charging user experience, but it also paves the way for future features and enhancements. Its key benefits include:
Currently, some devices are Qi Certified and some are not. In addition, non-certified devices that may work with Qi don’t charge as fast as they could. Unifying the industry under one global standard will resolve any confusion and simplify the category for consumers and retailers alike.
Thanks to the Magnetic Power Profile technology, Qi2 ensures devices and chargers align perfectly, improving energy efficiency. More efficient charging also means faster charging because energy is not lost in the charging process.
Qi2 will enable development of faster wireless charging while ensuring the process remains safe, won’t shorten battery life, and won’t damage the receiver. Qi2 will enable new product innovation in other ways, too. For example, the magnetic locking feature supports new product form factors, like AR/VR headsets. It will also support new types of accessories that magnetically attach to the back of the phone, like an extra battery.
Charging cords tend to wear out due to the mechanical stress of daily plugging and unplugging, ending up as waste in landfills. Alternatively, wireless chargers eliminate that mechanical stress and don’t wear out, reducing needless waste.
Qi2 Certified mobile phones and chargers are expected to be available for consumers for the 2023 holiday season. Stay tuned for an official launch announcement!
